VILLE PLATTE -- A very slow start and an off night shooting spelled trouble for the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans, as they fell to the Nortre Dame Lady Pioneers 55-35 here Tuesday night in the first District 5-2A contest for both teams.
In the game, the Lady Trojans shot 12 for 59 from the field and four for ten from the charity stripe, making for a long game for the Sacred Heart offense.
“We did not shoot the ball well,” stated Sacred Heart head coach Stephanie Fontenot. “We had open looks all night, but just could not find the basket. When you only shoot 20 percent from the field, it is hard to beat anybody.”
To top it off, the Lady Trojans began the game offensively in a rather turtle like fashion.
Notre Dame opened the scoring hitting on a pair of free throws just 30 seconds into the game.
Sacred Heart answered right back with a basket from Annabeth Briley.
The Lady Pioneers took over control of the first quarter, going on a 6-0 run to take an 8-2 lead with 5:20 left in the period.
Sacred Heart got a bucket from Dulcie Miller to cut the lead to 8-4. However, Notre Dame closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run to own a 16-6 advantage as the first period buzzer sounded.
Both offenses took a mini hiatus to open up the second quarter with only the Lady Pioneers scoring a basket in the first four minutes of the period.
With half of the quarter left to go, Notre Dame extended the lead to 22-6 on a pair of free throws and a two-point basket.
The Lady Trojans did manage to get some momentum going on offense, as Moira Parks and Catherine Poche each sank jump shots to cut the lead down to 12 points.
But, Notre Dame had an answer and finished the half on a 4-2 run to make the score 26-12 as the teams made their way into the locker room.
Sacred Heart came out with a little more pep in their step to start the second half. The Lady Trojans were able to cut the lead down to nine, 29-20, in the first three minutes of the third quarter.
Notre Dame pushed the lead back to 15 points, scoring the next six points in a row without an answer from Sacred Heart.
As the third quarter came to an end, the Lady Pioneers maintained a 12 point advantage, 36-24.
The Lady Trojans began the final period with a two-point basket from Caroline Dupre. Nevertheless, Notre Dame extended the lead back to 15 points as they went on a 5-0 run.
A basket by Poche at the 3:07 mark cut the Lady Pioneer lead back to 12 points, 43-31. But, several steals and missed shots from Sacred Heart allowed Notre Dame to finish the game with a 12-4 advantage to seal the win.
Sydney Shiver led the way for the Lady Trojans with 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers.
With the loss, Sacred Heart falls to 7-10 on the season and 0-1 in district play.
The Lady Trojans are scheduled to face Opelousas Catholic tomorrow night in Opelousas.
