Child struck by train in Basile
The Basile Police Department responded to a report of a child being struck by a train Wednesday, July 9, at approximately 4 p.m.
The incident occurred at the railroad crossing on Magnolia Street in Basile. The Basile police and the fire department responded, along with Acadian Ambulance, who were immediately dispatched to the scene.
According to the Basile Police Department, a 12-year-old boy was struck by a westbound Union Pacific train while riding his bicycle. It is believed the child attempted to cross the tracks in front of the passing train when he was struck and that the train crew made every attempt to avoid hitting the child.
The child received moderate injuries and was taken to Lafayette General by Acadian Ambulance. He was later transferred to another hospital and is being treated for his injuries, which were categorized as “very serious” but “not life threatening.”
